source software and off the shelf hardware you'll

News 9/14/11 Sorry this took so long to get out. We found a couple of major bugs just before releasing... Now to mention our busy personal lives. LinHES R7.00.03 is available for download. This release is a beta before R7.01.00 is release. We worked out various issue with upgrading from earlier releases to R7.00.03, while doing a backup and auto upgrade or via pacman will work, we'd ask you wait until the finish release before upgrading your production systems. But should you have the hardware to test or want to do a clean install, please give R7.00.03 a try. Please report any bugs you may encounter. 8/9/11 Have you ever had an out of body experience? I have. The last time was 8/8/03. This was the night before I introduced KnoppMyth to the world at an OCLUG meeting. I was in my living room watch a CD boot after I made some final changed. I saw myself starting there, arms crossed and smiling. As I look back on it, it seemed a witty cool smile. I'd done something good, something special. Of course, I didn't realize it just then. That something special came in time. It came in the friends I made and the community that formed around KnoppMyth/LinHES. Today is the 8th anniversary of the release KnoppMyth R1. Thank you my friends. A new R7 test ISO will be up shortly. A final "stable" release will be done soon. Additionally, we'll have news on a 64 bit version of LinHES! 8/2/11 Although things maybe quiet, the team and I are hard at work! One more week until the 8th anniversary of KnoppMyth/LinHES! 2/22/11 Here are details on the systems I'll be raffling off at SCALE 9X! Should you be interested, using the link to the left, you can PayPal me the funds. As I get the donations, I'll send you an email with your ticket number(s). I'll stop excepting PayPal donations for tickets at 1700 PST on Friday, the 25th of February, 2011. If you'll be at SCALE, see us at booth 28. At CES this past January, myself and others stopped at the Giada booth. They had some really nice looking systems! I later purchased two that I wanted to evaulate to see if I'd recommend them to the community. I liked both systems and both get the thumbs up. While Giada wouldn't give me an initial discount, they offered me a 5% commission on each system sold. I in turned asked if the commission could be give as a discount on the systems to which, they agreed! So, if you are looking for a new system, please give them at look. Thanks. 2/19/11 Two ISOs are available! LinHES Release 6.04.00 is available for download. This adds MythTV 0.24 (and plugins) to the R6 line. Additionally, LinHES Release 7.00.02 is also available. R7.00.02 should only be used for testing. While it should be stable for a new install, don't attempt to upgrade from R6 to R7 at this time. Don't for to check the MD5Sum for R6 and R7. Please note, if you want to upgrade to R6.04.00 and you are running an earlier version, you should upgrade over the network. See this thread for further details. R7 is progressing nicely! We still have some packages to recompile. R7 is a big upgrade as just about every package is being touched. We need to insure the upgrade is smooth for everyone. MiHanson and I will be at SCALE 9x the weekend of the 25th in booth 28! If you are in the southern California area, please stop by and see R7 in action! We'll also be having a raffle. I'll post details on the hardware shortly. 1/1/11 Happy New Year! Apologies for the lack of updates recently. More details can be found here. A test ISO for LinHES 7 is up! This should only be used on spare hardware. Grab the .md5sum file as well. You can check the ISO with: md5sum -c LinHES_R7.00.01.iso.md5sum The ISO is a hybrid ISO and can be burn onto a CD or you can use dd to place it on a USB thumb drive: dd if=LinHES_R7.00.01.iso of=/dev/sdX Please use the bug DB to report any issues. 8/28/10 In the next day or two, I'll be upgrading the testing repo so my fellow developers and I can better iron out some issue with LinHES 7. Testing will be unstable! Don't upgrade to testing until I've given the go ahead. We were hoping to have LinHES 7 ready for the 7th anniversary of KnoppMyth last month, but our personal lives must come first... 6/7/10 Thanks to mihanson, we have torrents up for the ISO and USBstick! LinHES 6.03.00 includes MythTV 0.23-fixes and many other fixes! If you are running an earlier release of LinHES to upgrade, simply: sudo pacman -Sy linhes-scripts sudo upgrade_linhes.sh If you are still running KnoppMyth and want upgrade to LinHES, I recommend you first backup and upgrade to LinHES 6.01.00. This is because both, use the same version of MythTV. You can then perform the above to get you to the latest LinHES and MythTV 0.23. 4/1/10 Sorry for the lack of updates folks. Work as been keeping me very busy. The project is still alive and doing well! In addition to my day job keeping me busy, the development team and I have been busy on the next release. Today, I'm announcing what changes are in store for the future of LinHES. I've decided to folk the Linux kernel and MythTV. The reason I'm doing this is to provide the best possible home entertainment solution. This fork will bring about a smaller distribution with vastily improved performance. Our current test ISO is under 200 megabytes. Imagine channel changing in under a second without lost PVR functionality! This is the future of LinHES! The only limitation will be hardware. In order to run use the new release, you must have a POWER7 processor and a GEFORCE GTX 480! 9/26/09 LinHES is out! Apologies for the lack of updates folks. Things have really been busy with work, but as with KnoppMyth, LinHES was introduced at the OCLUG today. 5/7/09 It is my birthday but you get the gift! I'm happy to release the second Preview Release of R6. While it is still being called a Preview Release, it is quite stable. The development team and I still have some bugs to squash and feature to implement. You can upgrade from any version of KnoppMyth greater than R3. Just backup first. If you are already running LinHES, then just sudo pacman -Syu. Please report any bugs via Flyspray. 4-1-09 I meant to post this earlier in the day, but the day got really busy really quick. You see, today was my last day with my employer. The job I started last year with Microsoft is no more. I've become a victim of this "economic downturn". Don't forget, you have until Feb 19th to donate to the project and get a change of winning either the Atomic Ant or Parcel! 1-28-09 It is a new year and a new release is almost upon us! Yes, KnoppMyth is still here. However it won't be for much longer. R6 will be released at SCALE 7X. With that release, I'm changing the name of KnoppMyth to LinHES. For years now, I've referred to my own setup as LinHES, so the name isn't really new. What is new, is LinHES will no longer be based on the Knoppix scripts and Debian GNU/Linux. Instead LinHES will be derived from Arch Linux. Due to Dale's death last year, some of our plans have changed. However, what hasn't changed is the commitment to continue to make KnoppMyth/LinHES the best solution for allowing you to create your own HTPC. LinHES brings with it a new graphically installer and The Service Menu. Both of these, utilize the MythTV librabries. This is written by James Meyer who first brought us Nuv2Disc years ago. The goal with KnoppMyth has always been to make an appliance. Make it easy, make it stable. I think to a large degree, KnoppMyth fits that build. With LinHES, R6 is even more of an appliance. From installation to setup to system configuration to daily use, it all flows as one. Despite the fact that a different distro is now being used as the basis of LinHES, upgrades from KnoppMyth to LinHES are smooth! I've been using LinHES on my MBE and KnoppMyth on my SBE for weeks now. I'm very happy with where LinHES currently is today. In fact, I'm seeing better performance with LinHES on the same hardware as I did with KnoppMyth! To celebrate the release of LinHES, I've built two systems. These systems are Atomic Ant and Parcel. Both systems are VDPAU capable! These systems will be raffled off at SCALE 7x on Sunday, Feb 22nd. If you'd like a change to win, all you have to do is donate $10.00 to the project. Each $10.00 donation buys one ticket. If you donate $30.00, you'll get 4 tickets. So, a $50.00 donate would get you 6 tickets. A $60.00 donate would get you 8 tickets. 7-07-08 The changelog has been updated to reflect "Bone Marrow". Be sure to read tjc's excellent update guide! More to come (updated changelog, etc.)... 4-01-08 Normally, "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas". But, I've been told it is ok to share this information. Last week, I was in Las Vegas. While at the bar in the Mirage, my friend and I were talking. He was asking how the my project was going and I was filling him in... Unbeknownst to either of us, our conversation was being listened to by the fellow next to us. After a few minutes, the fellow sitting next to us introduced himself as Jeff Chaucer, Senior Manager of Windows Media Center Edition. Jeff, goes on to tell us that he overheard what we were talking about and he is interested in learning more about KnoppMyth (I may not care for Microsoft, but my parents taught me not to be rude.). So, I tell him how I started the project, etc. "Interesting" he says. Jeff then goes on to tell me that Microsoft is looking to make changes to MCE and if I'd be interested in joining the team. I tell him that I'm happy with my current employer and that if I were to be a Microsoft employee that I imagine my working on KnoppMyth would be frowned upon. He says "No, not at all. Microsoft is looking to change it's image and there would be no issues with me continuing to work on an Open Source project. The only sipulation is that it doesn't interfare with an employee's day to day duties." Interesting I thought, but I declined. Jeff insisted I think about it and to contact him in a few days. We exchanged information and he paid our tab. I got a call from Jeff yesterday and he has sweetened the deal. Not only will Microsoft double my income, I can work on KnoppMyth 30% of my time. In addition, I'll have full access to their hardware labs to test KnoppMyth. So, starting April 21st, I'll be a full time Microsoft employee. 3-08-08 Been awhile... But not to worry, The Linux Media Entertainment Distribution is stilll here! MythTV 0.21 has been released! Again, not to worry, we should have a release ready within a week. Really, since the release of R5F27, I've been working on the next R5. I wanted to get it ready and out of the way so we could work in earnest on R6. The plan was to have it ready so when 0.21 was release, all I'd need to do was add it and have a release ready. Unfortunately things didn't go so smoothly. But I'm very happy with what we have now! I just need to button a few items down and once the testers give me the thumbs up, we'll have a public release. A few goodies to look forward to... Latest MythTV (of course)! 2.6.23-chw-4 (2.6.23.16 w/ several patches). Support for more remotes. The Tweaker (an R6 feature (and no, this didn't distract from R6 development))! Movie Trailers from the menu! Screensaver! ALSA 1.0.16. Latest V4L/DVB modules. I'll have the full changelog up once the release is ready. Well, I better get back to it! 1-03-08 I hope the new year is treating everyone well! I'm starting the year off well, as I received 3 HP dc7700 from HP. This will be KnoppMyth's fourth year at SCALE! R5F27 includes the latest version of MythTV 0.20.2-fixes, in addition to other goodies that you've come to expect from KnoppMyth.
